Path of Exile 2: Gems — Seasonal Planning
In Path of Exile 2, gems are the backbone of almost every build, and the way you acquire and use them changes each time a new league starts. This resource guide explains the gem system in plain terms and shows how to plan around seasonal resets, including the 1.0 launch scheduled for December 2026.
How gems shape a build
Grinding Gear Games designed Path of Exile 2 around two kinds of gems. Skill gems give your character active abilities, from attacks to spells to minions. Support gems are socketed into those skills and modify how they behave, for example by changing damage, area, speed or adding effects. A build is essentially a chosen set of skills plus the supports that make them work together, combined with gear and passive choices.
Because supports are tied to skills, planning a build means thinking about pairs and groups rather than single abilities. A strong skill with the wrong supports can feel weak, while a modest skill with well-matched supports can carry a character a long way.
Prerequisites before you plan
Gem planning is easier once a few basics are in place. You do not need deep knowledge of the economy, but you should be comfortable with these points.
- You understand what your class is good at and which damage types or playstyles fit it.
- You know how to read a gem’s description and its tags, so you can tell which supports are compatible.
- You have a rough idea of your target: casual campaign play, endgame mapping, or trading-focused play.
- You accept that early versions of a build will change as you find better gear and gems.
Why leagues change everything
Path of Exile 2 follows the series’ league model: periodically, a new league begins and the economy effectively resets. Everyone starts with new characters, currency and items become scarce again, and the value of particular gems shifts as players test new mechanics and balance changes.
For planning, that means each league has a rough rhythm. In the opening days, players lean on gems that are easy to obtain and builds that do not need rare items. As the league matures, more gems and currency circulate, trading becomes easier, and more demanding builds become practical. Starting a league with a build that depends on scarce items is one of the most common reasons players stall early.
Timing also affects how you value gems. Something that feels essential in week one may be easy to find a few weeks later, while a gem that suddenly becomes popular after a balance change can be hard to get for a while. Planning a league well usually means deciding in advance what you will use now, what you will wait for, and what you can skip entirely.
Planning for the 1.0 launch
Path of Exile 2 entered early access in December 2024. At Gamescom 2026, Grinding Gear Games announced that the 1.0 full release will arrive on 11 December 2026, when the game becomes free-to-play. A new class, the Duelist, built around sword and shield, also arrives with 1.0.
A free-to-play launch is likely to bring many new players into a fresh economy at the same time. Sensible preparation looks like this:
- Pick two or three build ideas rather than one, so you can adapt if a key gem is hard to get.
- Favor a starter that works with commonly available gems and can transition into something stronger later.
- Write down which supports each skill needs, in order of priority.
- Read the 1.0 patch notes carefully, since balance changes can affect gems you planned around.
- If you are curious about the Duelist, plan it as a new experiment rather than assuming older advice applies.
Realistic alternatives and outside help
Most players get the gems they need by playing, trading with other players and adjusting their build when something is out of reach. Community build guides, guild members and league-start discussions are free and often the quickest way to learn which setups are practical early on. For a broad starting point that collects guides and news in one place, the Path of Exile 2 guides and news overview is one page some players use to keep up between leagues.
Some players also look at third-party services when time is short. A page such as Path of Exile 2 gems services and player options lays out what kinds of gem-related help are offered, which can be useful context when comparing approaches. Keep in mind that real-money trading of items or currency breaches Grinding Gear Games’ terms, and boosting or account sharing can also lead to penalties.
- Read GGG’s current terms of use before using any outside service.
- Never share your account password or authentication codes.
- Check whether trading in-game or adjusting your build already solves the problem.
- Be cautious of guarantees, especially around a fresh league or launch.
Keeping your plan flexible
The most reliable seasonal plan is a flexible one. Understand how your skills and supports interact, start each league with something easy to assemble, and upgrade as the economy matures. That approach works whether you play every league or return only for big milestones like 1.0.
